Your Community Matters – September 2019

What’s your why?  Why do we choose the causes we do? It usually ties in to an experience that touched you in some way, made an imprint on your heart.

Strengthening community starts with people who are passionate to serve and make a difference for others.  Our region is filled with caring people who are committed to a purpose or cause that is important to them.  At the Community Foundation we are fortunate to share a common belief with many who understand our why, passion and purpose.

When exploring why an organization is there, it is important to reflect on what the organization stands for and inspires others to join in that movement.  Everything we do at the Foundation is an investment in community.  We, our donors, board members, staff members, founders and fund-holders have a strong sense of why we create funds to impact our communities.

Have you explored your community “why” and what inspires you?.  Perhaps as a child you were hungry and want to help lessen the gap in food security for people who have been there, like you.  Do you have a loved one who passed away, and to leave a legacy in their name, you choose to create a fund that enhances one of their passions?  Are you an avid hiker and want to protect the environment for your grandchildren and their grandchildren and so on?  What makes you come alive?  How will you measure your life? I encourage you to dive deeper into what inspires you to give and support your community and how the Community Foundation connects people like you with those areas.

We continue to help people support our vulnerable population, ensuring students have food in their bellies, protecting the environment, and so much more.  We know we are helping to make a positive impact in the lives of many people.

For the past 23 years, we have partnered with many families and individuals who created their legacy fund as a way to help others.  I invite you to contact with me on creating an endowment fund in support of your “why”, the community and causes you care about.

I am available at (780) 538-2820 to discuss how you can partner with the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta in building community, connecting people and increasing our collective sense of belonging throughout the region.

Connect people. Build community. For good, and forever.

Warmest wishes,

Jean Duplessis Family Legacy Fund

Strength and compassion were defining aspects of Eleanor “Jean” Duplessis’ character in life and continue to be part of her legacy through a special fund established by her children, Doug, Lorna and Norm, with the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta.

Focused on Jean’s strong belief that “education is something they can never take from you,” the Jean Duplessis Family Legacy Fund has supported nine local post secondary students since it was created in 2012 after Jean’s passing in 2011 at the age of 81.

The Community Foundation is proud to work with Jean’s family to continue to impact local students to achieve their post-secondary dream.

RBC Future Launch Community Challenge

The Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta is pleased to host the RBC Future Launch Community Challenge, and to make up to $30,000 available to youth-led projects in Northwestern Alberta that will respond to one central question:

What is your boldest idea to respond to an urgent local need?

By applying for a grant and bringing a local project to life, youth will have opportunities to lead, learn new skills, gain experience, and build relationships in their local communities — all things that will help them prepare for the future of work.

The deadline for applications is September 18, 2019. For more information call the foundation office at (780) 538-2820.
