The Barb and Al Side Family Fund

The Northwestern Alberta Foundation (NAF) is proud to announce the establishment of the Barb and Al Side Family Fund, an endowment fund totaling over $1.4 million. This significant contribution was officially acknowledged during a heartwarming evening of remembrance and celebration, at the Side residence on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

“We are deeply honored by the generosity and trust placed in us by the Side family,” stated Northwestern Alberta Foundation CEO, Laura LaValley. “This endowment fund represents a lasting legacy that will benefit our community for generations to come.”

The fund was created in honor of Barb and Al Side, whose community contributions have inspired their family to continue their legacy.  Linda Side explains, “The endowment provides a vehicle to give others a way to achieve what’s possible when you get a leg up.  That it goes on in perpetuity speaks to Mom and Dad’s steadfast belief around investment whether in family, community involvement or building business. The view is always long term. And in the case of this fund, forever.”

Reflecting on Al Side’s life, a bold theme of vision and community building emerged. From his humble beginnings, Al became a significant economic driver, a business icon, a magnetic family man, and a true community builder. His journey to becoming a pillar of the community is nothing short of inspirational.

Each year, NAF will accept applications for support, and consult with the Side Family to determine their priorities. The fund will support needs across northwestern Alberta. Linda Side reflects, “There is a unique attitude in this region; a genuine belief that the potential is endless and that anything is possible. The Side Family have benefitted a great deal by being in the Peace Country and by embracing that attitude. In fact, Barb & Al attributed much of their success to this. It was not lost on them that realizing that potential could be more challenging for some than others.”

“The Side family’s generous support over the years has been invaluable to our community,” LaValley noted. “This contribution is a loving extension of the legacy built by Al and Barb during their 69 years together. Their heart for community continues to shine through their children and grandchildren.”

Northwestern Alberta Foundation, on behalf of all the lives that will be positively impacted by this generous gift, extends our heartfelt gratitude to the Side family. We are committed to stewarding this contribution in a manner that honors the Side family and their remarkable legacy.
