Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta and Northwest Territories Society

Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.

When youth take JA, they are inspired to complete high school, consider and complete post-secondary education, consider careers they may not have pondered, gain access to JA resources available to teach them how to start, run and monetize a business, how the stock markets work, and in general what they need to know to be successful in business and in life, and contribute to their communities.

This year Junior Achievement delivered financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship programs digitally to students in grades three through twelve across Northern Alberta. These programs were delivered free of charge thanks to the support of our generous donors, sponsors and funders. Funding from the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta directly impacted 54 students from Grande Prairie in grade five. JA engaged with new volunteers and teachers in the Grande Prairie region.  In addition, 237 students from Grande Prairie received JA programs for the first time!

Their new Digital Programs, as it turned out, allowed them to reach more students, more cost-effectively, in more communities across Alberta than anticipated. JA trained 500+ volunteers to teach online and they appeared to students on the large video screen “Smart Boards” in classrooms across Alberta.

Here’s a few testimonials from students, teachers and volunteers of the program!

“I learned how to choose what I spend my money on and ways to be more financially responsible.” ~ Student

“Learning about the economy is relevant to our Social Studies! And the obvious connection to Math.” ~ Teacher

“I loved how excited the students were to share their ideas, and wanting to participate. Even though the program was conducted virtually; it was great to hear the student’s excitement.” ~ Volunteer

A big thank you to the Beattie Family Fund and Logan Family Fund for helping make this project come to life!
