JULY 2016

For 20 years the dedicated founders, ambassadors, and board members have pushed to build a Foundation full of smart and caring people with a 20/20 vision for the future.

This dedication and vision is the backbone of our foundation, and it is because of this that we are able to support the community in the capacity we do. In2015 we disbursed $138,720 in grants. $39,100 was directly invested into the success of 42 local post-secondary students.  Our Community Impact Grant applications and Student Award applications are now available.  The application deadline for both programs is September 30, 2016.  Details and the application forms are available on our website.

The student awards program is one that is very dear to our hearts at the Community Foundation. As an organization dedicated to creating a lasting legacy for generations to come it is an incredible honor to be able to invest not only in the projects and programs that help make our community strong, but also in the people who will one day become the leaders of our communities. By investing in our local students we are investing directly in the future success of our region.

All student awards and grants disbursed by the Foundation are made possible by the dedication of community leaders wishing to create their own legacy. Legacy funds are established by individuals, companies and organizations as a way to realize their charitable giving goals. We are grateful to partner with those whose foresight and generosity is directed to building lasting legacies for the support of charities and their community that they care about, now and forever.

Dave and Elizabeth Chomik and family could not think of a better way to celebrate their achievements both as a couple and as business owners than to repay the community for everything it has given them.

Tickets are selling quickly for our upcoming Nourish the North Wine & Auction.

Why is this event important to you and me? We know community engagement, youth living in poverty and physical wellbeing are important to each of us.  The focus of this evening will be sharing and supporting each of these areas and the work and services of the Community Foundation. We are proud to announce that Mayor Nenshi has been invited to speak at this year’s event on the topics of community connectedness and Vital Signs.

Let’s celebrate standing on the shoulders of giants!   We are honored for the many who have the vision and dedication to partner with the Community Foundation and grow it into the future forever.

Please feel free to contact me at 780-538-2820 or by replying to this e-mail to discuss how you can partner with the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta and how you can impact and inspire others in your community.Connect people. Build community. For good, and forever.

 Warmest wishes, Tracey Vavrek, CEO

Celebrating accomplishments . . .  & leaving legacies

Chomik Family Trumpeter Hotel Legacy Fund

An accomplishment is always something that deserves a little recognition. But some accomplishments call for outright celebration.

2003-2004 brought the Chomik Family two momentous accomplishments worth celebrating.

Dave and Elizabeth arrived in Grande Prairie with their family in September of 1983. By 2004 they had established a successful business that had been in operation for 21 years, and Dave and Elizabeth were preparing to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary

The Chomik family could not think of a better way to celebrate their achievements both as a couple and as business owners than to repay the community for everything they had given them.

As owners of the Trumpeter Hotel & Meeting Centre the Chomik’s were, and continue to be passionate about travel, tourism, and hospitality. They had built their lives on the industry and wanted to ensure that the industry, and those who wished to pursue it had a long term, local means to do so.

Their partnership with the Community Foundation in celebration of their business accomplishments and 50th anniversary saw the creation of the Chomik Family Trumpeter Hotel Fund. This Student Awards Fund is designed to help adult students with an interest in tourism and hospitality pursue their educational goals.

Janice Chomik, daughter of Dave and Elizabeth and former manager of the Trumpeter Hotel and Conference Centre remains actively involved with her family legacy fund today, attending granting ceremonies and witnessing first-hand the impact her family is having on local post-secondary students.

“This is our chance to give a hand up to local students in need. It is a chance to give back in a tangible real way. Says Janice.

“People should be proud of whatever it is they choose to do in their lives, and travel and tourism is a proud way to serve your community.”

Creating a legacy fund is easy.  For more information about legacy building and how you can be involved – visit our website or contact our office at 1 780 538 2820.
